Its more like reading than seeing, Black and White Photography...

On a resent shoot in Yosemite Valley, the weather was interesting to say the least. Big rain in a few short days, followed by a freezing cold! I found it an amazing opportunity for Black and White capture. We’ve be leading groups here for years and I’ve never seen the waters so high in the valley. The one thing about this place as a photographer, you can get overwhelmed by iconic shots, with Half Dome, El Capitan and all those great water vistas in springtime, along  with crowds...

In great weather you might want to avoid the valley, unless after spring or summer vistas. You'll be rubbing elbows with many others. If your looking for something obscure in the valley and you’re in need of something different, chances are better you'll find it if you go during these unsettled times. This where Black and White excels.

We try to head out to the valley when things get a bit nasty. I find if you can suffer through some bad weather the rewards are worth it. Black and White adds drama and contrast to this place, stormy skis and clouds cling to the granite walls and dusting snow It gives a fresh look  you won't find any other time. I really feel a monochrome encourages the viewers to study an image much more as with street photography. Black and White images becomes more of a read than a view in many cases.
